Great invention from Logitech

The latest universal remote from Harmony is here, and it ups the ante with a couple of key improvements: a touch screen and a much-improved keypad layout. Be prepared to shell out some serious cash, however.

Set to arrive in stores next month, the Harmony One is, as we say, more an evolution of Harmony's midrange remote line than a revolution. The basic design is about the same as the older Harmony 880; you've got your color display that shows all your A/V activities (Watch a DVD, Watch DRV, Play Xbox 360, etc.), devices, and custom commands, along with 40 physical keys for essential functions (Play, Pause, Record, Skip, Menu, and so on), plus the numeric keypad. Setup looks to be a breeze; you simply go online, select your various devices and activities, then sync up the remote via USB.

What's new this time around is the One's 2.2-inch touch screen, which replaces the 880's old color display and eight flanking buttons. I gave it a try on the show floor, and the touch display works great (the screen resolution is sharper as well, and now supports network logos)—it's a welcome change from dealing with the narrow functions buttons on the older Harmony. Also new: a much better keypad layout with a new, easier-to-use D-pad (the old, oval directional pad on the 880 was a pain) and distinctively shaped Play, Pause, and Skip keys (which all had the same, boxy shape on the older remote). And cosmetically, the One's glossy, jet-black shell would make Neo proud.

Harmony's universal remotes have never been all that cheap, the One is no exception. That said, I love my Harmony 880, warts and all, and the One looks like a worthy successor.

Dog Lover must see this invent

If your dog is crap at thermoregulation, you are going to need to give the little tyke a hand. The Cool&Hot comfort pad not only comes with a fantastic PR image, but it will also allow your pet to get all cuddled up and warm in the winter, or remain as cool as a corpse throughout the summer.

The controls are only operable by animals with opposable thumbs, but it is suitable for any gender of dog, not just bitches, as the fantastic title of this article suggests. If your canine compadre is the very apple of your eye, or you are Legend, we recommend paying out the highly unreasonable, 18,500 yen . Be warned though; your little mutt (not a euphemism), is likely to rip through the Cool&Hot pad with its teeth, piss on the exposed electric wiring of the heating element and then scorch its face off as it collapses in a horrific electrifying spasm due to electrocution. You just can't buy that kind of publicity. (No animals were harmed in the making of this article.)

Thermochromatic Toilet Seat

Few things are grosser or more uncomfortable than sitting down on a public toilet and realizing the seat is still warm from the last, random pair of butt cheeks that were planted there. Oh my god, butts! So gross!

Luckily, there are inventions like this thermochromatic toilet seat out there that are designed to help warn you of potential gross warmness. It changes colors depending on how warm it is, so if there's a big, yellow, butt-shaped mark on it, you know what you're in for. As soon as this thing gets installed in some public restrooms, you'll be safe from that gross feeling forever. The future's so bright I've gotta wear shades.

Takara's New Toy Controls Your Dreams

If only those unfortunate kids on Elm Street could've gotten their desperate hands on Takara's Yumemi Koubou, Japanese for "Dream Viewing Workshop," Freddy Krueger would have gone home scoreless. The Yumemi Koubou is designed to give you control over your dreams.

The Yumemi Koubou works by first relaxing you; lulling you to sleep with soft background music, mood lights, and a "pleasing" fragrance. Once the mood has been set, it's your turn to respond. To solidify the dream content, according to Takara, you need to record one simple, concise summary phrase with the built-in recorder. Make it a good one--this phrase will be repeated throughout the night quietly while you're sleeping.

With knowledge of a standard eight-hour sleep schedule, the device activates periodically during your REM sleep cycles, giving gentle reminders of the desired dream content (in other words, more music, fragrance, and replaying your recorded phrase).

In a written statement, a representative from Takara states, "… this product is designed to help people shape their dreams in sleep, combining multi-sensory stimulus and sophisticated sleep-dream research to create an environment conducive to having a specific dream desired by the user."

The project is spearheaded by Dr. Eiko Matsuda, Professor of Sociology at Edogawa University, whose research is focused on identifying and treating the causes of nightmares.

Takara, Japan's second-largest toy company and best known in the techie U.S. audience for the Bow-Lingual, hopes to release the Yumemi Koubou in the United States in late 2004 or early 2005, according to a company representative, and pricing has not yet been decided. The device will be available in Japan in May 2004 for 14,800 yen (approximately U.S. $140).

Takara does not claim that the device is 100% effective and it does admit that the device is still in the testing phase.

According to the company representative, we, at ExtremeTech, should have an evaluation unit in our hands in late 2004. At that point, you'll get the straight story on whether or not it works-unless of course, our brains have been reprogrammed by Takara.

2002 Best Inventions Dog Translator

Wonder what your dog is really thinking? Japanese toymaker Takara claims it can get you in touch with your inner canine through its new Bowlingual. A radio microphone attaches to Fido's collar, and a handheld receiver "translates" his yelps, growls and whines into such phrases as "I can't stand it," "How boring" and "I'm lonely." How does it work? Samples of dog noises were collected, interpreted by animal behaviorists and stored in a doggie database. When your dog barks, the sound is beamed to the handheld and matched to the database. When in doubt, take him for a walk.
